Primary Schools

The Holocaust Centre is home to the UK’s first permanent children’s exhibition on the Holocaust, ‘The Journey’ uses the story of a fictional Jewish child, Leo Stein, to explore the circumstances that led to the persecution of the Jews and other groups in Nazi Germany. Children will walk through Leo’s home, school and street. They will visit his father’s shop, the ‘hiding’ space under the stairs and the carriage that takes him to safety in England. Children will see many unique artefacts and meet Holocaust survivors personally.

An accompanying outreach programme and mobile exhibition will support primary schools that cannot visit the Centre to teach about the Holocaust.

The Journey is an important resource in the battle to reduce racism and bullying within schools. It provides an opportunity for children to discuss social values and it will prompt children to explore issues of identity.

Of the Berlin street: “At this point, I felt things really clicked into place and the children began to understand day-to-day life for Jews.”  The carriage was engaging and poignant; children really got to see what happened in reality, but in a sensitive way.”  “The home was atmospheric and children got a real feel for life in Germany in the 1930s.”
