History Speaks Local Dimension

The History Speaks Online Resource found on http://www.historyspeaks.org.uk/youth was launched on 26th January 2009, where over 200 Holocaust Survivors interviews are made available to students in schools. These interviews were conducted by school students who visited the Holocaust Centre between 2006-2008. Schools now are encouraged to use the resource to base their community cohesion projects on.

We are now going to focus on working with groups of young people for 2 years to produce surveys, interviews and analysis of their local area. They will be given the space of 4 weeks to absorb, plan and implement a project which will be displayed and disseminated on the History Speaks – Create and Face-2-Face sections.

These groups will focus on an area of their community, dispelling myths and breaking down barriers. They will display their work and create opportunities for other similar excluded children to have access to issues of Hate Crime, and tools for dialogue with young people and with older generations. The groups will present their project to the wider community.

Aims:

To allow participation and contribution by young people who are not in the school system to the History Speaks Online Archive and Resource found on http://www.historyspeaks.org.uk/youth

Objectives:

a) To build a truly inclusive young people community, and to allow disengaged young people to contribute towards the preservation of their history, and the ability to disseminate information on the web content platform which is regulated and monitored.

b) To provide the opportunity for young people to build real skills which would allow them to have a sense of achievement

c) To encourage active participation in the community through the project

Activities:

Up to 4 groups of young people of different backgrounds, will be given a month each to work on

a) Researching the Holocaust, Stephen Lawrence Inquiry and Hate Crime.

b) Finding meaning and relevance of the themes and lessons from the Holocaust in present day UK

c) Scope and plan activities to contribute towards History Speaks: activities will range from putting together surveys, collating information, preparing for interviews, piecing together information from the interview and local/national history and events, learning to construct events and narrative using History Speaks interactive tools and presentation skills.

We are now selecting suitable young people groups for the programme.

This programme is made possible through the generous support of Beitler Foundation and Boots Charitable Trust.

Of the Berlin street: “At this point, I felt things really clicked into place and the children began to understand day-to-day life for Jews.”  The carriage was engaging and poignant; children really got to see what happened in reality, but in a sensitive way.”  “The home was atmospheric and children got a real feel for life in Germany in the 1930s.”
